Although our website is easy to use there may be many questions you would like to have answered on ordering, security, or technical points regarding your new glasses. You can contact us at customercare@specsdot.com.
The following information will give answers to the most frequently asked questions, if you cannot find what you are looking for, please contact us at the email address above.
You may already have a copy of your prescription, which you can use if it is less than 2 years old. If not, then have an eye test at your local opticians who must then give you a copy of your prescription by law.
This applies to both private and NHS examinations. Whist obtaining your prescription
you can ask for your inter pupilary distance measurement. (See FAQ's for more info)
Although this is not essential as you can provide it for yourself by following our
simple instructions or we will use our experience to centre your lenses in the
appropriate position.

Distance Glasses are for seeing things more clearly and comfortably when
they are well beyond arms length typically for T.V., Driving, Cinema, Sport
watching etc., in some cases these may be described as general wear and can
be used to do close work as well. Your optician will give you advice as to
your specific optical uses when you have your eyes tested.

Only for close work within arms length. These glasses will usually make more distant objects less clear. Typically this is for Reading or Fine Details on objects Less than 3 Feet (1 Metre) away.
This is mainly used for viewing at just beyond arms length. Typically use with a Computer Screen, which is beyond a normal Reading Distance. Some work or hobby situations benefit from specs with this type of prescription when you spend a lot of time viewing at this sort of distance.
a combination of distance and near prescriptions in one Lens enabling the user to see distance and near clearly with the same pair of specs.
A more complex Lens option 'Blending' Distant, Intermediate and Near into one lens. We do not supply this type of Lenses, as they require careful, exact, measurement to work successfully. We advise this type of Lens to be obtained from your optician.
This is the distance, horizontally between the centres of your two pupils
(see diagram). It enables exact centring of your Lenses in your chosen frame.

Your optician can be requested to provide you with this as par t of your prescription; alternatively you can measure this for yourself. By looking in a mirror typically a man has a PD between 63 > 70mm a lady 58 > 66mm.
If you are a 'larger' or 'smaller' person your personal P.D. may well be more or less than typical. Please try to be as accurate as possible with your P.D.
This is not as difficult as you may think.
Most opticians use a prescription form based on the example below:
Take this and fill in the On Line Prescriptions form as Below:
If any information does not appear to translate directly into the above form or you are unsure how to proceed please contact us by phone on 01626 351294 or email support@specsdot.com where we will be able to interpret this for you. Some of the boxes may be blank. Please leave these empty, as many prescriptions require only some of the boxes to be filled in.
The Cylinder (CYL) box may have a + or - sign in it, please ensure this is correct when you fill in the prescription forms. If any of the details require explanation or appear ambiguous please contact us for confirmation before proceeding. Errors made inputting your prescription cannot be corrected after manufacturing your specs.
Some prescriptions may contain additional information such as visual
acuity (V.A.) written as e.g. 6/9 or 6/12 or 6/5 etc. This is a measure of
your corrected vision and is NOT required to make your new specs.

Our standard single vision Lenses are included in the complete price quoted for your new specs. These are available to suit most prescriptions - only when the sphere (SPH) is greater than + 6.00 or - 10.00 or the CYL is Greater Than +/- 4.00 will standard Lenses be unsuitable, then we would advise your local optician to make your glasses. Even though it is possible for us to "custom make" high powered glasses we feel your local optician is the correct place to go as he will ensure access to specialised products and fit your frames to take thicker & heavier lenses.
Standard Bifocals are supplied as D28 style which is ideal for general distance / near use. The Bifocal is placed 3mm below the Datum Line of the lens shape. To suit normal usage conditions.
(See Diagram below) Bifocals are available for an additional £14.50
To avoid confusion, specsdot.com include options, usually charged for separately,
in one inclusive price. This adds maximum value at suprisingly little cost, making
them thin, light and highly durable for one additional charge. See the table below
for your lens options.

What's Included:
Bifocals are not available in all the options in the table above.
Bifocals can be multicoated for Anti Reflection/Hard/Easy Clean Lens surfaces for an additional £25.00 Brown & Grey photochromic D28 fog Bifocals are available for an additional £60.00 (Sixty).
Not all options are available in all prescriptions if we encounter a particular problem we will contact you to discuss your options.
The darkness of a tint is given as a percentage with 0% being clear and 100% allowing no light through. The two standard Tint colours we offer are Brown & Grey as follows:
Photochromic lenses lighten and darken according to the available light. We do not recommend them as driving sunglasses as they are less efficient behind glass in a car.
Our multi-coated lenses are of the highest quality and stop nearly all reflections on lens surfaces whilst being highly scratch resistant. Coated lenses cut out UV light which is an invisible radiation produced by the sun. Excess UV is linked to cataract development and macular degeneration its reduction is always advisable.

This is the most commonly used material for spectacle lenses. This high quality organic plastic is very tough, much lighter than glass, and is available in a very wide range of prescriptions. specsdot.com supply this lens type FREE with all frames unless an upgraded lens option is selected to make your glasses thinner and lighter.
This Hi Index lens material is supplied complete with a very special surface layer that includes a hard coating , anti-reflection coating and Ultra violet protection to 380nm This material is up to 30%lighter than an equivalent lens produced in standard plastic and is up to 20% thinner. The upgrade cost is £20.00 for this lens option.
This superb lens is at the forefront of modern lens technology. The high quality coating on this lens uses EMI Anti Static ,significantly reducing radiation and is virtually 100% antistatic, keeping the lens surfaces dust free.Included with this lens type is a High Index hard coating for high scratch resistance, Broadband anti-reflection coating to enhance night driving and high UV protection at 400nm. As well as the quality of the coating on this lens type it is most often chosen for its amazing thickness and weight saving ... a further 25% thinner than the above 1.6 lens!!! The AS stands for ASPHERIC... this produces the optimum vision for the wearer by reducing distortions and giving one of the sharpest retinal images available. AS reduces the lens profile providing the wearer with a flatter , thinner, and lighter lens. The upgrade cost for this lens option is £40.00.
Simply the best ... This lens is the thinnest and lightest hard resin available, it has all of the advantages of the 1.67AS but is an amazing 40%+ improvement over a standard plastic lens. we recommend this option if you want your lenses to be the very best possible, especially when your prescription is greater than +/- 6.00 DS The upgrade cost for this lens option is £70.00.
Lens thickness comparison between different materials.
All our frames are of High Quality and will give long comfortable service. Correct adjustment for optimum comfort is often required, your local optician can do this for you, there may be a small charge for this service.
Our frame descriptions give a general idea of suitability for specific facial sizes and uses and will indicate if specifically unsuitable for certain uses - i.e. not suitable for Bifocals etc.
